Washington, DC - April 1, 2025.
Polygon Research today announced the incorporation of the 2024 HMDA Loan Application Register (LAR) dataset into HMDAVision, following the public data release by the CFPB on March 31, 2025. This update provides a robust foundation for analyzing 2024 mortgage lending, a market comprising 6,149,171 originated loans and exceeding $2 trillion in volume. Compared to 2023, originations grew 7.7% by unit count and 14.3% by dollar value, signaling solid expansion. The 2024 market was fueled by stabilizing interest rates, pent-up demand, and an increased refinance activity.
Polygon Research has ranked the top 12 U.S. mortgage lenders by number of originated loans, a metric that isolates lenders driving impact by directly serving homebuyers and refinancers. By excluding purchased loans, this approach isolates origination performance, offering a clear gauge of market leadership with share derived from number of originations.
The ranking, produced in HMDAVision, is presented below. In addition to the ranking by number of units, we show the overall market share for each lender, and the year-over-year change in originations based on the 2023 HMDA LAR. There is great variability in year-over-year performance among lenders, which highlights the importance of agility and innovation in a competitive landscape.
With seven years of data and 124.5 million loan-level transactions, HMDAVision provides a comprehensive lens into these lending patterns. Polygon Research’s tool empowers lenders, policymakers, and analysts to forecast market trends, refine product strategies, enhance marketing outreach, and ensure compliance with fair lending regulations. As the mortgage industry evolves, HMDAVision remains an indispensable tool for navigating its complexities.
Polygon Research continues to set the standard for extracting actionable value from HMDA LAR data, delivering clarity and precision to its clients.
